In the summer of 2005 the doctors said they were 99% sure filmmaker Phoebe Brown did not have ovarian cancer. She turned out to be the 1%. Two years later Phoebe is cancer free but not without scars.

In 99 to 1: Ovarian Cancer and Me, the filmmaker takes us on a journey through her diagnosis, her grandmother's death from ovarian cancer, her physical and emotional reactions to chemotherapy treatment and her hopes for the future.

Shot, edited and narrated by Ms. Brown, 99 to1 is intimate, funny, sad and quirky, much like the filmmaker herself. Using experimental technique and the fragments of her cancer archive delivers a powerful narrative of hope and brings awareness to the often overlooked issues of ovarian cancer. 99 to 1 reminds us that while sometimes being the exception is tough it can also lead to strength you never expected.

The inspiration for this project was the silence that often accompanies gynecolgical cancers and the misperception that ovarian cancer only effects older women. Phoebe tells a story that isfresh, different and avoids the cancer 'victim' stance. As a crew of one, Ms. Brown uses the camera to create a true self-portrait and push the envelope of traditional documentary filmmaking.

In a country where a high school education is generally

reserved for boys.

Hoctavia is one of 31 children, most of whom dropped out of school.

Ruth lives in a tiny apartment in a Kampala slum with

her mother and three siblings.

Graduating from high school is the only way they can lift

themselves and their families out of poverty.

Like millions of girls in Africa who will never move

beyond primary school, their challenges are not unique.

Their story is.

Alma, a typical teenager in the Southwest, has no idea that she's actually an illegal immigrant. Alma's father, an overprotective Mexican, is determined to keep her illegal status from her because he knows once she discovers the truth she will live in fear of getting caught.

Alma is used to obeying her parents, but Alma's wild friend Lupita is set on showing Alma how to break the rules. Influenced by Lupita, Alma stays out past her curfew and attempts to score beer. After their plan fails and Alma ends up drinking a large amount of soda, she witnesses an illegal immigrant, a friend of her father's, being arrested by the Border Patrol. Alma approaches Senor Vargas to help him and unwittingly comes close to being arrested herself. Fearing for her parents' safety -- for she does know they are undocumented -- Alma escapes the Border Patrol and runs home only to find herself locked out for breaking curfew.

Sick from her run, drinking 5 sodas, and fearing her parents' arrest, Alma vomits. Her parents mistakenly think she's drunk. When Alma tells them that Senor Vargas was arrested, Alma's mother insists that they tell Alma the truth to keep her safe. Alma's father agrees to tell her in the morning, but to punish her for her disobedience he makes her sleep outside.

While Alma sleeps, her father covers her with a blanket. He watches her tenderly, knowing that what he will tell her in the morning will forever change her life.

Sam Archer never fit in with her traditional southern family. She doesn't dress like them, she's messy, her nail polish is chipped, and she hates country music. Her older sister, Grace, though, has lived up to their parents' ideal: blond, trendy, prissy. Most importantly, Grace was president of Alpha Beta Delta, the sorority that every Archer woman for the past 100 years has peppily joined.

Sam refuses to rush ABD. Instead, she's determined to make a name for herself as a journalist like her hero, Christiane Amanpour. But when Sam is chosen to write a cover story for the university paper, she decides to go undercover and rush ABD after all, hoping to write a scathing expose of the sorority that has been ruling the women in her family for years.
